Design & look

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is sporty and seriously futuristic and has a very different look from many other SUVs with a lot of angular styling. Hyundai calls it a Clamshell Bonnet and says it’s aerodynamic to improve the car’s efficiency so that you can go further. You also get 20-inch wheels, which look very cool, and flush door handles. You may even get the car confused with a hatchback at first glance, but it’s got a seriously impressive amount of space inside!

The design of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is even more impressive in the dark when it’s all lit up!

The car is available in Two Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive, with the RWD getting 21km more range. However, there are more and more charging stations across the ACT now, thanks to ActewAGL, so charging isn’t as much of a hassle anymore.

If you’re looking for a family car, you’ll be happy to know that you get a huge boot with 527 litres of storage space, perfect for prams, scooters and other bits and bobs! You also get a frunk to keep all your charging cables. The boot space, combined with the range this car offers, means it’s perfect for family road trips, too!

Driving this car is smooth, comfortable and mostly quiet, though you may need to get used to the fact the gear selector is on the steering wheel. On the other hand, it is a heavy car, and you might feel that on bumpy roads, and there is also some body lean, so you might not want to be driving too fast down a windy country road!

Features and interior

The outside of the car might look pretty cool, but it’s on the inside where it really shines. There is so much space inside the Hyundai IONIQ 5, and the space is very configurable. For example, the centre console slides forward and back, with both rows of seats able to slide electronically. The front seats can even recline back to allow maximum relaxation if you’re charging the car while out on the road.

You can also adjust both the front and rear seats with a memory function, so you always get the same comfort level – and so do the kids!

There is so much space at the front of the car with no gear stick, leaving more room for storage.

Like the Kia EV6, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has twin displays for your infotainment system and dash, while some functions are kept separate. However, one annoying thing is that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto need to be connected using a USB cord rather than wirelessly. Once you’ve got that going, you can enjoy the eight-speaker Bose sound system! There is wireless phone charging, however.

You enjoy a lot of natural light thanks to the panoramic sunroof, which kids will absolutely love! There are also two air vents in the back for passengers, who have plenty of legroom thanks to those sliding seats. There are also many USB ports for keeping your phones topped up!

You can choose from either a white or dark interior, with the white giving a really nice, bright, airy feel. In addition, Hyundai has chosen soft, sustainable materials throughout the interior, making the car feel very luxurious.

Performance

Charging the Hyundai IONIQ 5 can take just under an hour, if you have access to a 350kW charger, that is! However, on a 50kW charger, you’re still getting up to 80% charge in under an hour. The car will take hours to fully charge if you’re at home.

Both versions come with a 72.6 kW battery with the consumption figures sitting at 7.9kWh/100km and 19.0kWh/100km for the 2WD and AWD, respectively, making it much more efficient than the Volvo XC40, for example, which sits at 25.5kWh/100km.

The battery life is impressive, with both variants offering a decent range. The 2WD gets you 451km, and the AWD hits 430km. Thanks to the regenerative braking, however, your range is actually extended if you’re mainly driving around town and stopping and starting often, so you might not need to charge it as regularly if that’s the way you use it most of the time!

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is also quite fast for a regular driver, with the 2WD going from 0-100km/h in 7.4s and the AWD going from 0-100km/h in 5.2s.

Safety and warranty

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating and has a total of seven airbags, including one in the centre.

The car comes with many safety features, including smart cruise control, blind-spot collision avoidance-assist, blind-spot view monitor, safe exit assist, 360-degree camera, lane keeping assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, forward collision avoidance and driver attention warning.

One of our favourite features that is popping up more and more often is the remote smart parking assist which means the car can reverse itself or park in a tight spot without you in the car.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with services every 12 months or 15,000kms. The battery is also covered for eight years or 160,000kms, whichever comes first.

You also get two ISOFIX points and three top tether points for child seats.

Summary

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is an excellent option for most people.  It’s futuristic, has great range, and feels luxurious while also using sustainable materials. This car is also great for families, thanks to its spacious interiors! The only real downside is that it is in very high demand, so it could be a little while before you can drive one away.
