If you have a canine companion, keeping it safe in your car is a top priority. If positioned in the boot or back seats, dogs can heat up quickly (especially brachycephalic breeds), and with less air conditioning flow to those areas, they’re at risk of becoming dehydrated, developing heatstroke or even die.

To combat dogs overheating, Tesla have developed Dog Mode, a way of setting the car temperature to a safe level, even when you leave the car. Let’s investigate Dog Mode for cars and how you can keep your pup safe in your EV.

What is Tesla Dog Mode?

Everyone knows it is a bad idea to leave pets unattended in cars, especially on a hot day. If there is a reason to exit the car with your dog inside for a short period, Tesla’s Dog Mode allows you to set the car’s climate control to a safe temperature. Because there is no engine to be left running, the system can run on the battery, with the car off.

To alert any concerned passers-by, Tesla’s in-car screen will display a message saying the air conditioning is on and the dog is safe. Once you return to your car, Dog Mode automatically switches off.

Do all EVs have dog-friendly modes?

While Dog Mode is officially a Tesla-only function, other makes are developing electric car dog friendly modes. Ford is currently patenting its Pet Mode, which operates the same way as Dog Mode, but offers much more. In addition to climate control, Pet Mode will allow drivers to lower the windows, open the sunroof and even play relaxing music for their furry travel companion!

How can I keep my dog safe in my EV on a hot day?

  • Monitor the temperature in your car when your dog is travelling and always have the air conditioning on when hot.
  • Bring a non-spill bowl and plenty of water with you that will last the whole journey.
  • Monitor your dog. If they are breathing or panting heavily, stop for a break and allow them to cool down or stretch their legs somewhere shady.
  • Consider buying a cooling collar or a cooling mat for them to lie on during the car journey.
  • Install shades or blinds in your car windows.

Summary

  • Tesla’s Dog Mode allows drivers to set the climate control to a safe level when they have exited the car while their dog remains inside.
  • Ford is developing a similar Pet Mode which also lets drivers adjust the windows and sunroof, as well as play their dog music.
  • When travelling on a hot day, always monitor the car temperature and your dog’s condition. Travel prepared with water and cooling accessories.
