If you’re thinking about buying or leasing an electric car, you may be curious about the EV servicing process. The thought of all that cutting-edge tech under the bonnet may instil fear about costly things that can wrong, when in fact the opposite is true.
One of the amazing benefits of EVs is that since there are fewer parts in use, they require fewer services and maintenance repairs in comparison to internal combustion engine cars. In the long run this will save you money.
How are electric cars serviced?
With fewer moving components, EVs don’t require spark plug replacements, oil or filter changes and generally spend less time in the garage, which is great news for owners. That said, servicing an electric car is still needed to ensure it runs smoothly.
The RAC recommends electric vehicles should be serviced every 12 months or between 10,000km and 15,000km to identify and fix any issues. During a service a diagnostic machine will pick up things that need attention like the battery, cooling system, brakes, suspension, lights, airbags, and steering.
Other ad-hoc services your EV will require will include:
- Brake fluid changes every two years.
- Tyre wear and replacement.
- Cooling fluid changes every two years or 30,000 miles.
- Electric motor issues arising from excessive temperatures, dust or vibration.
- Windscreen issues and part replacement.
How should I take care of my electric car?
To support the lifespan and wellbeing of your EV (and limit what needs attention during a service) you can help keep it in tip-top condition by actioning the following:
- Check tyre pressure every two months.
- Aim to keep the battery charged to 80% as much as possible to prolong its life.
- Only charge to 100% if you are going on a long journey. Being constantly at 100% can degrade it quicker.
- Park your EV in the shade as much as possible, and do not allow it to overheat to protect the battery.
- Only use the correct charger that is right for your EV.
- Avoid rapid chargers as much as possible as they can strain the battery.
- Only use a trusted mechanic that is qualified in servicing and repairing electric cars.
Summary
- The RAC recommends electric vehicles should be serviced every 12 months or between 10,000km and 15,000km.
- During an EV service the battery, cooling system, brakes, suspension, and steering will be assessed.
- To maintain your EV’s battery and overall lifespan, do not let it overheat, and use the correct charger to keep it charged to no more than 80% as much as possible.
