Venture 20 minutes north of Canberra city centre and you’ll discover a carnival of South American flavours at La Empanada Bakehouse. Located in Gungahlin, this alluring bakery has a serious rep for its namesake empanadas.

Perfectly baked golden pockets of pastry burst to reveal delicious, sweet, or savoury fillings. As La Empanada’s saying goes, ‘one is never enough’ so be prepared to arrive with an appetite.

What’s the La Empanada Bakehouse story?

Ever since the husband-and-wife team, André Nogales and Andrea Carvajal, opened their pop-up at Kingston’s Old Bus Depot Markets in 2016, their delicious empanadas gained a cult following. To satisfy demand, they opened La Empanada Bakehouse, and not surprisingly it’s been a roaring success.

Step inside the Hibberson Street bakery and you’re immediately greeted with row-upon-row of neatly crimped empanadas sitting temptingly behind the glass counter, as the sound of salsa fills the air.

Whether you fancy something classically Latin American, unexpected Southeast Asian flavours or a sticky-sweet delight, there’s a filling for everyone at La Empanada Bakehouse. In fact, it’s their imaginative take on internationally inspired fillings that makes it such a hit.

Or perhaps try a piece of Italy with Pizza Mia, loaded with ham, mozzarella and napolitana sauce. Vegan? No problemo! La Empanada have an array of meat and dairy-free options like their Pumpkin and Chickpea Curry pastry.

No visit would be complete without the heavenly Apple & Dulce de Leche empanada, oozing with authentic Argentinian dulce de leche. La Empanada Bakehouse serves all-day breakfast burritos, acai bowls, and waffles too.
