Because there is no engine to be left running, the system can run on the battery, with the car off.
To alert any concerned passers-by, Tesla’s in-car screen will display a message saying the air conditioning is on and the dog is safe. Once you return to your car, Dog Mode automatically switches off.

While Dog Mode is officially a Tesla-only function, other makes are developing electric car dog friendly modes. Ford is currently patenting its Pet Mode, which operates the same way as Dog Mode, but offers much more.
