If you’re considering buying, leasing, or financing an EV, you may be curious whether it comes with its own charger or if you will need to buy or rent one separately.

Here, we outline everything you need to know about home charging and what all your charging options are to get on the road in a flash.

Yes, your EV will come with a charger

The good news is that, as standard, all new EV models in Australia come with a Type 2 three-pin plug charger cable that will fit into a domestic socket.

Type 1 chargers allow for power levels of around 3.7kW and up to 7.4kW, while Type 2 chargers allow for 3.7kW, 7.4kW and 22kW three-phase. 22kW is the fastest charging method, although your charge point will need to be three-phase compatible using a three-phase electricity supply.

While Type 1 and Type 2 chargers are slower, many EV drivers choose to power up their cars overnight with them. Charging for an hour with a 7.4 kW Type 2 charger delivers about 40km of range.

What other home charging options do I have for my EV?

When it comes to charging your EV at home or place of work, you are not limited to the charger that comes with it. Wall-mounted smart chargers are up to ten times faster than a regular Type 1 or 2 domestic socket charger and will intelligently charge your vehicle at times when energy rates are lower, helping you save money.

Buying and installing a smart charger can be expensive, renting one can spread the cost in manageable payments. For just $44.95 a month, our evCharge Plan will bring an EV charger to your home or business. Not only will you enjoy rapid charging, but you will benefit from 12 months free public charging on the Evie east-coast network.

How do I charge my EV on the move?

Public EV charging stations offer the fastest type of charging, much quicker than your Type 1 or 2 charger. DC charging at public stations can run up to 150kW of power, meaning your EV can be fully powered within half an hour.

In the ACT there are 60 public chargers across the region, with 20 more arriving by the end of 2022. Our Evie east-coast network includes three rapid chargers and eight fast chargers.
