When looking for an EV, it’s important to consider how long it will take to charge. Perhaps you do long commutes, or maybe you love those weekend getaways. When you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, you don’t want to be twiddling your thumbs for ages when it’s time to recharge mid-route.

From their battery sizes and speeds to voltages, here we present the fastest-charging EVs in Australia so you can confidently navigate the market and find a car that’ll power up in a flash.

Porsche Taycan

EV batteries typically come with 400v or 800v architecture. The higher the voltage, the faster the battery will charge. Thanks to its hefty 800v battery, the Porsche Taycan is the fastest-charging EV currently out there.

The Taycan can access 270kW DC fast-charging stations, meaning you can add approximately 100km of range in just over five minutes. Using a Level 2 AC home charger, the Porsche Taycan requires around nine hours for a complete 0-100% charge. However, with a 350kW rapid charger, it takes about 19 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

Audi e-tron GT

Audi’s e-tron GT offers a harmonious blend of speed and fast charging. With its 800v electrical system and onboard 22kW 3-phase charger, it can charge at rates of up to 270kW of DC power at ultra-fast public charging stations. Every five minutes of charging at one adds up to 100km of range. The e-tron GT’s battery can go from 5% to 80% capacity in under 23 minutes. Using a Level 2 AC home charger, it takes about nine hours and 15 minutes for a full charge.

Tesla Model Y & Model 3

Tesla has long been at the forefront of EV technology, and their vehicles come with access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network in Australia. It’s little surprise that its Model Y and Model 3 are some of the fastest-charging EVs.

Just 15 minutes at a 250kW Supercharger will add up to 261km of range on the Model Y and 282km on the Model 3. An 11kW Level 2 AC home charger will charge the Model Y fully in under eight hours and just over eight hours for the Model 3.

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 is an affordable EV with 800v fast-charging capabilities. It supports charging rates of up to 240kW, so you can quickly top up the battery and continue your journey without extended breaks. Its 77.4kWh battery can go from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes using a rapid 350kW DC public charger. Meanwhile, a Level 2 AC home charger will fully power it in eight and a half hours.

Genesis GV60

Matching the Kia EV6 for fast charging, the Genesis GV60 can also go from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes using a rapid 350kW DC public charger. For home charging, the GV60’s AC charging capacity is 10kW, adding 100km of range in just over an hour and a half.

Summary

The fastest-charging EVs on the Australian market in 2023 are the Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, Tesla Model 3 and Y, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60.
