To help ACT residents become more energy efficient, the Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme offers homeowners loans of up to $15,000. These zero-interest loans can be paid back over ten years and are to help with the costs of energy-efficient upgrades.

Read on to discover if you are eligible and what products and systems you could get financial support towards.

How does it work?

The Sustainable Household Scheme covers all energy-efficient upgrades that can save money while lowering your household’s emissions.

These include but are not limited to rooftop solar panels, household battery storage systems, electric heating and cooling systems, hot water heat pumps (HWHP), electric stove tops, electric vehicles, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, ceiling insulation and related installation costs for these products.

A household may borrow a maximum of $15,000 over the life of the Scheme across the four eligible product categories. The minimum loan application value is $2,000; all applicants will be subject to a credit check.

After establishing what energy-efficient products or systems are suitable for their household, applicants need to obtain quotes from approved suppliers. Once quotes are received, applicants can complete the Sustainable Household Scheme loan application for evaluation. Once a loan is approved, the supplier will schedule a date and time to install the product or system.

Your interest-free loan can be spread across multiple products – for instance, purchasing an electric vehicle and installing an EV charger – and you have up to ten years to repay it.

Can I access the program to install an EV charger?

You can apply for a loan under Category A of the Sustainable Household Scheme. This interest-free EV charging loan will go towards the cost of a home EV charger and its installation. To be eligible for this category, you need to be an ACT resident who owns their home.

A dedicated, wall-mounted smart EV charger is much faster than the standard cable that comes with your EV. When it comes to EV charging, ActewAGL is an approved Sustainable Household Scheme supplier. As part of our ActewAGL EV Charge plan, you will receive hassle-free installation of a high-spec smart EV charger and 12 months free public charging on the Evie Network.

Can I access the program to purchase an EV?

Yes, you can apply for a loan to purchase an EV under Category C of the Sustainable Household Scheme through an eligible vendor, such as Vyro. To be eligible for this category, you need to hold a current ACT driver’s licence.
