From its charming harbour to its thriving dining scene, the pretty coastal town of Bermagui has plenty going for it. One of Bermagui’s main highlights however, is its iconic Blue Pool. On the town’s easternmost point, hewn out of the natural cliffside, the Blue Pool is a beautiful spot to swim and snorkel in fresh seawater.

What is the Blue Pool?

Almost 100 years ago the Blue Pool was a giant natural rock pool dubbed the Blue Pool. Local philanthropist Bill Dickinson recognised its potential in the 1930s and set about transforming it into a saltwater pool that could be enjoyed by the town and used for swimming competitions.

Today, the Blue Pool has been extended to create a large 50m swimming pool, with a smaller children’s wading pool next to it. Steps connect a sundeck with picnic benches down to both pools.

What is the best way to experience the Blue Pool?

Sat at the bottom of a craggy rock face along Pacific Drive, the Blue Pool overlooks the sparkling Tasman Sea. At high tide, it’s completely submerged so plan your visit at low tide to enjoy a swim backdropped by incredible coastal views.

Being a mostly natural formation and fed by the sea, the Blue Pool is an ecological paradise. Abundant in marine life you can spot crabs scuttling, fish swimming and colourful anemones swaying beneath the blue. Bringing your snorkel and facemask is an absolute must to check out the Blue Pool’s underwater residents.

During spring, you may even spot whales in the distance making their annual migration journey.

What else is there to see and do around Bermagui?

When visiting the Blue Pool, spend some time in Bermagui wandering around its pretty harbour before sitting down to lunch at Bermagui Fishermen’s Wharf. This awesome dining complex has an array of globally inspired eateries, from Italian to Asian.

Bermagui is famed for fishing, so if you’re partial to casting off, you’ll be able to charter a boat for a day of big game or deep sea and reef fishing.

The Blue Pool isn’t the only natural coastal wonder in the area. A 15-minute drive away, Horse Head Rock is a magnificent geological formation in the shape of a horse right by the sea.
