Occupying the historic Kingston Powerhouse, Canberra Glassworks invites visitors to delve into the mesmerising world of glass artistry. Whether you want to witness the alchemy that transforms molten glass into exquisite works of art or have a stab at the craft yourself, a day out at Canberra Glassworks will get your creativity flowing.

What’s the Canberra Glassworks story?

Like a living glass studio, Canberra Glassworks gives visitors the rare opportunity to see skilled artisans in action as they manipulate liquid glass into intricate shapes and vibrant designs. Its cathedral-sized industrial interior is something to behold and the perfect backdrop for a compelling world where craftsmanship meets artistic expression.

It is far more than just an open studio concept. Funded by the ACT Government, Canberra Glassworks is Australia’s only cultural centre solely dedicated to contemporary glass art. It is a true multidimensional space with a gallery and exhibition halls, gift shop and workspaces for classes. And let’s not forget the Hotshop, home to the fiery furnace and the beating heart of the Glassworks.

I feel creative, what can I do at Canberra Glassworks?

Canberra Glassworks offers interactive workshops and classes suitable for all skill levels. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, you can try your hand at anything from tile-making and bead-making to glass-blowing basics and the ancient art of mosaics.

These classes are immersive experiences that will transform you from a curious novice into a fully-fledged glass enthusiast and run on half days or full days over the weekend or in term.

What else can I experience at Canberra Glassworks?

Canberra Glassworks’ gallery spaces present rotating exhibitions of local and international glass artists such as Judi Elliott and Drew Spangenberg. Expect a visual feast, ranging from delicate sculptures and homeware to bold installations that push the boundaries of glass as an artistic medium.

For a deeper dive into the building’s heritage, you can take a free one-hour Heritage Tour that aligns the former powerhouse’s historic features with creative contemporary glass additions.

Keep an eye on Canberra Glassworks’ vibrant events calendar for gallery floor talks from resident artists like Nicholas Burridge and Rosalind Lemoh. You’ll get an insider peek into their creative process and inspirations.

Want to get involved? Canberra Glassworks has a volunteer scheme whereby, in exchange for meeting and greeting visitors, you’ll get behind-the-scenes access and the chance to work alongside leading glass artists.
