For handcrafted local wares and artisanal produce, Canberrans can’t get enough of the brilliant Old Bus Depot Markets which take place each Sunday. If you’ve not yet discovered this emporium of handicrafts, food and clothing, then there’s a treasure trove of things to be unearthed, right on your doorstep.

What do I need to know about the Old Bus Depot Markets?

As its name suggests, the Old Bus Depot Markets is housed within the former transport depot, Eastlake Garage in Kingston. Every Sunday morning, this vast industrial space is transformed into a vibrant bustling market packed with stallholders selling their merchandise.

Thirty years ago, its founders Diane Hinds and Morna Whiting came up with the idea of starting a local market that showcased regionally made items and produce. After discovering the former bus depot, they were lucky enough to secure the space and its popularity and reputation has only grown since.

With themed markets most Sundays; Multicultural, Designer and Collectable, there will be new surprises each time you visit. Come for a rummage, stay for the atmosphere and good vibes.

What can I buy at the Old Bus Depot Markets?

The Old Bus Depot Markets is where ACT bakers, makers, artists and designers sell their wares. Shop for handcrafted and vintage clothing, artisanal leather goods and fine fabrics by felt makers and yarn spinners.

There’s beautiful jewellery made with semi-precious Australian stones and cultured pearls, decorative ceramics, wood-turned ornaments and hand-poured candles. Weave around the throng of stalls and you’ll find enchanting artworks by local artists alongside photography and greetings cards. Pick up something for the home or garden when you visit.

Food is a big deal at the Old Bus Depot Markets. Inhale the aroma of dishes at the multicultural street food stalls where you can buy anything from Ethiopian spicy stew to Southeast Asian spring rolls. As a takeaway treat, purchase some indulgent cannoli, fudge or macarons.

Perfect for a family visit, there’s handcrafted kids’ toys, sweet clothing and even face painting to keep the little ones amused.

What else is there to see and do around Kingston?

The Old Bus Depot Markets was instrumental in kickstarting the regeneration of the Kingston Foreshore. Canberran’s love this area of their city for its abundance of buzzing cafes, bars and restaurants.

After a Sunday spell at the market, enjoy a lazy afternoon along this waterside stretch with an ice cream in hand strolling along the boardwalk. Call into Canberra Glassworks to see molten glass transform or its latest exhibition. Recharge with a coffee and tasty burrito bowl at Bean & Table.
