The otherworldly formations of Drawing Room Rocks render it an unmissable highlight of Barren Grounds Nature Reserve near Berry. Accessing this majestic plateau requires a scenic hike through tea tree forests, heathland and pastoral farmland. Here’s how to get there to enjoy what’s possibly the best view in NSW.

What are Drawing Room Rocks?

Crowning the edge of the Illawarra escarpment, Drawing Room Rocks owe their curious name to their unique shape. Over millennia, erosion has carved out Hawkesbury Sandstone into dozens of flat-topped surfaces evoking dining tables and chairs. So, quite literally, nature’s drawing room.

A magnificent geological lookout, from Drawing Room Rocks’ summit you get a 360-vista across Kangaroo Valley, all the way to Kiama and the rolling South Pacific. Don’t forget your camera and watch your step – they are pretty sheer.

How can I reach Drawing Room Rocks?

A short yet steep 4.5km return hike will lead you to Drawing Room Rocks and back again. In northern Berry, pick up Brogers Creek Rd until you see the trail signposted. Once parked up you’ll begin your ascent through lush farmlands before hitting fern-laden forests.

Although the climb may be somewhat calf-taxing, you’re rewarded with bounteous biodiversity at every step, from orchids and gnarled tree roots to lyrebirds and kookaburras.

As you approach the summit, the path flattens and you’re greeted with the awe-inspiring sight of Drawing Room Rocks. Why not use them as your very own picnic dining table while basking in the beauty of your epic surroundings?
