Not far from Sydney’s urban sprawl, beneath the waters of the Harbour lies an underwater utopia bursting with wonders of the deep. From going eye-to-eye with nurse sharks to exploring shipwrecks, the award-winning Sydney Dive Charters operate some of the best guided recreational and technical diving tours for scuba enthusiasts.

How can I swim with sharks?

Sydney Dive Charters’ Grey Nurse Shark Dive to The Apartments lasts four hours. From its base in Rose Bay, Sydney Dive Charters will cruise you out on a purpose-built dive boat to famed dive site, the Apartments. Just off long Reef, on the edge of a rocky plateau with a plethora of caves and swim-through tunnels, the Apartments is where colonies of grey nurse sharks mate and make their home.

Once briefed and fully kitted out with top equipment, you’ll slowly descend the anchor line. As you swim past small schooling fish and colourful coral-covered caves you’ll witness many large grey nurse sharks that like to congregate in the Apartments’ gutters. Watch out for thousands of southern pomfrets, giant cuttlefish and kingfish too.

How can I dive and explore shipwrecks?

Sydney’s coastline is littered with hundreds of shipwrecks and Sydney Dive Charters operates tours to over 25 of them. For more experienced divers with a Tec 40 Certification, the Tec 1 boat dive is a subaquatic adventure 50 metres down to the slowly rusting remains of sunken ships.

Swim around the Himma, a 1980s tug that was scuttled to create an artificial reef for local fisherman. See schools of jewfish in the hold of the fully intact Canoe Barge. Glide between the rudder and props of the SS Myola that sits submerged off the Long Reef Headland.

Do Sydney Dive Charters offer any other kinds of dives?

For a unique perspective of Sydney’s underwater worlds, you can take a Night Boat Dive. Under the light of the moon, the inky blue waters reveal incredible nocturnal marine life like weedy seadragons, seahorses and anglerfish. The night-time dive sites are located on reefs home to coral gardens and sponges so even in the dark, this exquisite environment is abound with colour. You can even visit the fully intact TSS Currajong in the dead of night in the Harbour’s main shipping channel.
