Sustainability is a big buzzword in dining, but when it comes to conscious eating, The Blue Door puts its money where your mouth is. The tiny, 20-seater in Surry Hills is so committed to the green cause, it only serves dishes dependent on what its farmers supply in season.

What is the vibe at The Blue Door?

Behind its namesake blue door, the small, smart and stylish eatery delivers ethical flavours in an uncomplicated setting. A handful of tables fill the space, and at its end, a bar and open kitchen provide the theatrics.

At The Blue Door, its ambitious food takes centre stage, but despite the fine-dining flair, the mood is relaxed, with excitement and energy about what’s on the plate.

What can I eat and drink at The Blue Door?

Provenance, provenance, provenance. That is The Blue Door’s philosophy. On offer is an ever-changing, seven-course tasting menu, crafted with ethical, local produce from their hand-picked NSW farmers and suppliers.

Whatever is in season, is on your plate. Bread is crafted with heritage wheat from Queensland and meat comes only from farmers that chef and owner Dylan Cashman have personally approved.

Arriving pretty-as-a-picture, dishes like the Chris Bolton Garfish Escabeche, showcases Cashman’s talent and precision, while (optional) paired wines complement each of the seven courses.

The team at The Blue Door put as much love into their wines as they do the food. Every wine is NSW-sourced and a celebration of the region’s diverse drops. You’ll find cool-climate De Beaurepaire reds and lively Canobolas-Smith Alchemy whites.

Mondays and Tuesdays at The Blue Door are low-key for a more pared-down dining experience, you can enjoy grazing on duck tacos and Dylan Fried Chicken from The Wine Down Snack Bar menu.

What else can I see and do around Surry Hills?

When it comes to hip establishments, The Blue Door is in good company. After your dinner, why not head to the ultra-chic cinema, Golden Age to catch a classic flick accompanied by a perfectly poured cocktail?

If you just want a drink minus the movie, Four Pillars Gin Laboratory is only a few blocks away from The Blue Door, where you can even take a gin-making masterclass. When you want to call it a night (or perhaps carry on the party) check in to Ace Hotel Sydney, the latest outpost from the cool hotel group.
