Explore Ngunnawal culture and heritage
The first inhabitants of the Canberra region, the Ngunnawal people are deeply connected to Tidbinbilla. Tidbinbilla itself derives from the Ngunnawal word ‘Jedbinbilla’ meaning ‘where boys become men’, confirming the area’s importance in representing profound personal growth.
Once a settlement for the Ngunnawal people, Tidbinbilla is home to many ancient sites. Rock shelters around the Gibraltar rock peak house fascinating folk art, while geological formations like an eagle-shaped rock hold great significance to Ngunnawal legends and dreams.
Artefacts were found at the Birriagi Rock Shelter, the ACT’s oldest Aboriginal rock shelter, dating back 25,000 years. This fascinating portal into Australia’s past can be explored via the 3km Birrigai Time Trail, which starts at the reserve’s entrance.
Get up close and personal with nature
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve gives visitors a front row seat to Australia’s majestic wildlife. Its vast wetlands ecosystem, The Sanctuary, is a refuge for platypuses and bird species. Take a stroll along its 2km overwater walkway and keep your eyes peeled for bandicoots and wallabies.
Koalas enjoy the protection of the Eucalypt Forest where they hang out under shady boughs. Long-nosed potoroos and swamp wallabies also share this habitat. The 700m Koala Path is where you will spot the furry creatures dozing in the sun.
To learn more about the animals, wildlife and nature, Tidbinbilla’s Rangers and Wildlife Officers are on hand to host guided activities.
