Thanks to its trendy shade of ‘millennial pink’, the Bruce Pink Lake has become something of a local attraction in recent years. If you haven’t yet explored this natural wonder on your doorstep, visit to witness a colourful carpet of rose-hued plants adorning the water’s surface.
What is the Bruce Pink Lake?
Located in Bruce, right next door to the University of Canberra, the Bruce Pink Lake shot to local fame in 2019. Due to a unique natural phenomenon, the lake is covered with azolla pinnata, an aquatic microfern native to Australia. This plant is normally green but changes to pink in low phosphorus water by anthocyanins – the same pigment that makes raspberries pink.
The result? A dazzling aquatic sight that remains bubble gum pink almost perennially. Harmless to wildlife, nesting coots and ducks are able to glide through the microferns with ease.
How can I reach Bruce Pink Lake?
You can visit this striking natural (yet uniquely urban) marvel by heading to Eardley Street in Bruce. You’ll find plenty of street parking nearby before picking your prime position to snap your Instagram moments in front of the pink lake.
After, carry on your nature appreciation at Bruce’s other beautiful natural locations.
What else is there to see and do around Bruce?
When you’ve checked out the Bruce Pink Lake, why not stroll on over to the Gossan Hill Nature Reserve for a glorious woodland walk? You’ll spot wildflowers popping in spring as you amble though its open red stringybark forest.
Bordering Gossan Hill, Bruce Ridge Nature Reserve is 98-hectares of suburban bushland. As such, it’s fully geared up for cyclists and walkers with plenty of well-marked trails for biking and hiking. Spend an afternoon exploring its bushland hills and lowland native grasslands either on foot or two wheels.
