If cranking up the gears on your bike and swerving through kilometres of eucalypts and coastal paths gets you going, Tathra’s awesome mountain bike trails are made for you. With 40 tracks spanning a combined 55km, NSW’s idyllic coastal town of Tathra is a serious biking destination.

But you don’t need to be a seasoned cyclist, there’s an array of gentler cycle paths to suit every age and skill level. So, strap your bikes on your EV’s roof rack and get ready to visit a pedalling paradise.

Tathra: the Sapphire Coast’s number one mountain biking destination

Tathra sits in the shadow of hilly wildlife reserves and beautiful forests. Snaking their way through these beautiful Sapphire Coast landscapes are the many Bundadung mountain bike trails.

Varying in incline and distance, the trails offer both white knuckle rides and genteel journeys, making Tathra ideal for families with kids of all ages.

What kind of cycle rides can I have at Tathra?

The Bundadung mountain bike trails’ main trailhead is located at the amusingly named Poo Ponds Loop. Here you can park your EV, get kitted up and ready to go. There’s also a parking area just off Bega Street for a second set of trails on Tathra’s southern side.

One of the most popular trails is the 14km Fire Shed Loop. Suitable for intermediate riders, with many ups and downs, it climbs to a peak elevation of 127m, weaving in-between trees and zooming down gullies. Then there’s the legendary Kingy’s Climb, a 2.4km ascent to the top of a mountain.

If you’d prefer slower jaunts pedalling at your own pace while drinking in the attractive surroundings rather than adrenaline-fuelled rides, consider the more sedate Little Dickie, a 1km 400m climb overlooking the Bega River. For fun obstacle challenges like gully drops or log rollovers, the southern trails present lots of opportunities to pull stunts.

The best way to complete your Thatha mountain biking expedition? Zipping all the way to Tathra Beach for a cooling ocean dip.

What else is there to see and do around Tathra?

With a typical Sapphire Coast laid-back vibe, Tathra is a place to kick back and chill. Why not make it your base for a mountain biking long-weekend camping or staying at the heritage Tathra Hotel?

When you’re not pedalling at top speed, explore the charming timbered Tathra Wharf’s shops and bars, before slipping on your snorkel for a spot of swimming.
