Canberra is officially leading the zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) transition, with numbers tripling compared to 2022, according to recent statistics. This impressive growth has positioned the ACT well ahead of other states and territories, firmly establishing it as the leader in Australia’s push towards a more sustainable future.

Let’s explore what is prompting this surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, the statistics, and the strong incentives that the government has put in place to help Canberra’s transition.

Zero-emissions vehicles in the ACT: what the stats say

Almost one in five cars registered in the ACT is now an electric vehicle, with nearly 900 new models hitting the road in 2023 alone. This is a significant increase from the previous year, as EV registrations in the ACT have tripled in the past 12 months, rising from 6% of new vehicle registrations in 2022 to 18% so far in 2023.

According to the Electric Vehicle Council’s 2022 State of EVs report, ZEV sales in the ACT were around 9.5%, which is much higher than the national sales uptake average of 3.39%.

Government incentives that help the ZEV transition

Canberra’s growing community of EV drivers is, in no small part, thanks to the ACT’s attractive government incentives. Offering the most generous EV financial incentives in Australia, the ACT was the only territory to have them in place throughout the entirety of 2021. These incentives helped the ACT perform best proportionally that year, with 5% of vehicle sales being electric, compared to the national figure of 2%.

Additionally, under the ACT’s Sustainable Household Scheme, eligible households can access a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000 to buy an EV. New or used EVs get two years’ free vehicle registration, plus new EVs purchased for the first time are eligible for a full stamp duty exemption.

These five join 33 existing AC destination chargers and DC fast chargers, and ActewAGL and Evie Networks will be delivering another 35 chargers by October 2023.

To support the ACT Government’s net zero emissions by 2045 target, ActewAGL has committed to helping 1 in 4 households to switch to an electric vehicle by 2030.
